93-95 points/'Sweet Spot/Outstanding,' Allen Meadows (Burghound): "(from a huge 3.98 ha parcel). There is a whiff of exotic spice sitting atop the ripe aromas of black raspberry coulis, violet, orange peel and Asian-style tea. The caressing but solidly energetic middle weight plus flavors manage to be at once elegant yet powerful before culminating in an equally austere, compact and beautifully well-balanced finale. This beauty of a Champans is also going to need at least 7 to 8 years of patience and should be more than capable of rewarding 12 to 15. Drink: 2032+. (Apr 2022)"

93-95 points Neal Martin (Vinous): "The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru certainly has the most opulent bouquet amongst d’Angerville’s ‘20s with exuberant black cherries, raspberry coulis, hints of fresh fig and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with quasi-chalky tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline and poised with a harmonious finish not dissimilar to the Taillepieds. Satisfying persistence here, but in keeping with d'Angerville's other Volnays, it is quite serious in personality and this will oblige cellaring. Quite regal. Drink: 2026-2046. (Dec 2021)"

94 points Charles Curtis, MW (Decanter): "Pronounced aromas of black plum and cassis, with notes of rose petal and liquorice. The texture is full-bodied and rich, with solid but silky tannins, while the extract and freshness carry this to a lingering finish. Marvellous. Among the leading appellations at d'Angerville, the vines are divided into two parcels that run the length of the vineyard. The grapes are destemmed and given a cold soak prior to fermentation and ageing in cask (10-15% new). Drinking Window: 2025-2040. (Nov 2021)"

94 points Falstaff Guide: "Clear, bright ruby red in the glass. The flavours are vibrant and intense while giving an overall impression of lightness and transparency. Crabapple, pomegranate, strawberry, pinecones. Structured, with an impressive, firm though almost imperceptible tannic grip. The tannins holding this wine together are like a finely woven basket holding a cornucopia. A beautiful wine with tremendous promise. (Jan 2022)"

94 points Christy Canterbury, MW (TimAtkin.com): "This is François Duvivier's favourite, and it is certainly jovial and outgoing with its mouthfilling purple fruits. Plus, the palate feel is velvety and creamy. I do find the tannins a bit short and pointy now, but with the excellent substance, a few more months in barrel, François' guiding hand and the Champans pedigree, this will absolutely come around nicely with a bit more age. 2024-40. (2022)"

92-94+ points William Kelley (Wine Advocate): "Aromas of red berries, orange rind, raw cocoa, warm spices and forest floor preface the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Champans, a medium to full-bodied, rich and structured wine that's firmer and more muscular than the Taillepieds this year. This is one cuvée that is a touch more structured than its 2019 counterpart, and it will require a bit of patience. (Jan 2022)"

92-94 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy): "Fairly deep fresh purple, the 2020 Champans has less immediate weight of fruit at first on the nose, than the impressive Taillepieds but I suspect it is all there. The discretion continues on the first half of the palate, but thereafter there is a wealth of dark but fresh raspberry, a little more structure behind, both good acidity and tannins. (Oct 2021)"
