96-98+ points Lisa Perrotti-Brown (The Wine Independent): "The 2021 Chardonnay Powder House was tasted as a tank sample, due to be bottled in December 2022. It soars out of the glass with a gorgeous perfume of peach cobbler, apple blossoms, and honeydew melon, leading to suggestions of persimmons, quince, spice cake, and almond croissant with a waft of honeycomb. Full-bodied, the palate is so fragrant and graceful, with a fantastic seamlessness and silken texture, leading to amazing length and depth on the finish of this gorgeous wine. This vineyard, on Goldridge soils near downtown Forestville, was planted in 2013. There are basically 2 clones, Hyde and Mt Eden, on 420 A & 114 rootstocks, and the row direction is due north. Drink: 2023-2036. (9/21/22)"

97 points James Suckling: "Love the aromas of lemon-lime, gunpowder, kiwi, and dried lemons. It’s full, phenolic and solid. This is like red wine in structure. Long and persistent. One for the cellar. Give this some time. Best after 2025. (12/11/22)"

95-97 points Joe Czerwinski (Wine Advocate): "Floral, non-fruity hints of crushed stone and talcum powder appear on the nose of Aubert's 2021 Chardonnay Powder House, creating an attractive counterpoint to the wine's honeyed richness and intense white-peach notes. Full-bodied and silky in feel, it's a bit custardy in texture yet lithe, graceful and long, with an almost mentholated finish. There are 2,000 cases this vintage, from a Forestville vineyard planted in 2015 mainly to Hyde Old Wente, plus a bit of Mount Eden. Drink: 2023-2035. (12/30/22)"

94-96 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2021 Chardonnay Powder House is elegant, polished and also a touch reticent. That won’t be an issue in time, but the Powder House is decidedly reticent today. Strong mineral accents are front and center, while the fruit feels pushed into the background. Mark Aubert's Chardonnays have historically aged quite well. I expect that will be the case here as well. Drink: 2024-2033. (Jan 2023)"

Producer notes: "The 2021 Powder House is a study in minerality and persistence. True to its name, the wine bounds out of the glass with powdered lime zest and crushed seashell aromatics that frame notes of candied green apple and Madame Plantier rose. Sweet graham cracker and almond croissant perfectly knit with these lifted citrus and orchard fruits across the palate alongside an unfading, saline minerality. Structurally, the wine is poised and precise, with mouthwatering acidity characteristic of a true vin de garde. Enjoyable today, the wine will soar through the coming decade, and can be cellared over the next 10 to 15 years."
